Shoppes at Capps Farm Update

May 21, 2008 Opelika, Planning, TigerTown Comments Off

>The OA News is reporting that the plans for the Shoppes at Capps Farm across I-85 from Lowes and TigerTown have been changed and are going to be brought to the Opelika Planning Commission for approval.

>>The developer as well as the Capps Family Partners have made changes to the plans such as removing walkways and fountains that were originally included in the plans and a subsequent rezoning request, said Opelika Planning Department Director Jerry Kelley.

>>The original concept of an open-air lifestyle center style development now has changed to a main shopping mall area and out-parcel, free-standing businesses style that resembles Tigertown.

>>The requested zoning changes for The Shoppes at Capps Farm would change it from a planned unit development district to a commercial office/retail and gateway corridor district.

>>The revised plans currently include a main shopping area with a theater and two hotel lots.

>>We will continue to update this story as we get reports from the planning commision and other sources.

“What’s Coming Where” Rumors

May 1, 2008 Opelika, Rumors, TigerTown Comments Off

Here is a list of several rumored businesses coming to Lee County. Some of these have been rumored for a long time and others are more recent. This post is just an update not breaking news.

  • Tigertown has announced a number of other establishments over the last year, but none have broken ground (like Atlanta Bread Company, Shane’s Rib Shack, a second Marriott-brand hotel next to the one they’re already buidling, and two banks that will be in the two lots between Kinnucan’s and Kroger fuel station.)

  • The West Pace development on South College and I-85 has a Lynch Auto Group sign posted declaring its new home there.

  • Waffle House is potentially opening a downtown Auburn location where Daylight Donuts formerly operated.

TIGERTOWN KOHL’S TO BE FIRST IN THE MARKET

OPELIKA, AL, February 27, 2008— Kohl’s Department Store will build its first store in the Opelika-Auburn market in TigerTown, developers Newton Oldacre McDonald announced today. Construction on the 68,500 square foot store will begin immediately with opening scheduled just prior to the Christmas shopping season this year.

“The addition of Kohl’s to the growing retail mix at TigerTown will offer an unprecedented breadth of shopping to the east central Alabama retail market,” said Bill Oldacre, principal of Newton Oldacre McDonald. “Thanks to the leadership of many, particularly Mayor Gary Fuller and Economic Development Director Al Cook, TigerTown is poised to grow to approximately one million square feet of space upon completion. That puts the center among an elite number of centers of its size in the Southeast.” “The local community has responded well to the high-quality retail offerings already open in TigerTown, and we’re pleased to bring in another sought-after prominent brand name–Kohl’s,” said Mayor Fuller.
The TigerTown Kohl’s will offer apparel, shoes and accessories for women, children and men, plus home products like small electrics, bedding, luggage and more. Headquartered in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, Kohl’s is known for carrying national brands at locally competitive prices. Kohl’s currently operates more than 900 stores and 10 distribution centers in 46 states.

TigerTown began development in 2003, and is already home to stores and restaurants such as Target, Kroger, Logan’s Roadhouse, Starbucks, Chick-Fil-A, Buffalo Wildwings, Quizno’s, Moe’s Southwest Grill, Marble Slab Creamery, Home Depot, Office Depot, World Market, Best Buy, Books-A-Million, T.J. Maxx, Old Navy, Dick’s Sporting Goods, PETCO, Ross Dress for Less, Hibbett Sports, Shoe Department, Olive Garden, Kirkland’s Home, and Jersey Mike’s. Located at the intersection of I-85 and U.S. 280, the 130-acre mixed-use development is east central Alabama’s largest retail center and is expected to ultimately house up to 1,000,000 square feet of retail, restaurant and lodging space.

Newton Oldacre McDonald LLC, with offices in Prattville, AL, Nashville, TN, Cincinnati, OH and Phoenix, AZ, is a developer of mixed-use centers, shopping centers and net-leased retail properties throughout Alabama, the Southeast, Midwest and Southwest.
